A customizable dashboard for users to start their day
After relaunching the Evernote apps in 2020, we created a new surface area to put each user's most relevant information front and center. I lead the design team that worked for more than ten months on the first version of this new feature, from ideation to implementation.
Historically, the starting page of the app was a simple list of notes - that meant users had to put effort to figure out what was important and get to it. Evernote's Home brings information to life in a more glanceable way, predicting and surfacing relevant content at every moment to help users prioritize and decide where to spend time.
Around this period, we were also introducing a task management feature and a calendar integration, so Home was strategically essential to aggregate different types of content into a simple, organized view.
Recognizing the size of our audience and the broad diversity of use cases, we designed an adaptable interface that gives users the freedom to shape their experience and choose what to see and how to see it.
A month after going to market, more than half of WAUs had engaged with Home and had customized it, confirming the need for a better way to start the app and the appetite for a tailored interface we had heard in user research.
My responsibilities:
- Managing a distributed design team across two different geographies and time zones.
- Creating early wireframes and proof of concept, working with our user research team to validate them, and getting buy-in from key stakeholders.
- Hiring and onboarding a new product designer.
- Facilitating weekly design reviews and cross-functional meetings to collect ideas and feedback, keep stakeholders aligned, and ensure the feasibility of the work throughout the process.
- Collaborating with PMs and Engineering leads to prioritize sprints and break down the project into achievable milestones.
- Overseeing all stages of the design process and ensuring timely completion of deliverables, including detailed specs for mobile and desktop, first launch experience and monetization flows.
- Working with Product Marketing and Customer Support partners on Go-To-Market, communications and support programs.
